Two men stepped out of the dark SUV into the night air, walking casually toward the scene with their hands tucked deep inside heavy jackets. They called out like friendly, concerned drivers asking if the officer needed assistance with a broken-down rig. Vance stepped away from the passenger door of his car and held up a hand, respectfully denying their help.
He informed them that he was currently handling an active felony arrest on a live highway and firmly ordered them to return to their vehicle and move along immediately. The men paused on the asphalt, exchanging a quick, silent glance. They didn't move back toward their SUV. Instead, their eyes drifted past the officer, fixating directly on the pile of wrapped packages sitting exposed on the front seat of the police cruiser.
Vance placed his hand on his baton, repeating his command for the two men to back away and leave the area. Thinking the men were finally complying as they took a step backward, Vance turned his head for a fraction of a second to check on his handcuffed prisoner. In that split second of distraction, one of the men lunged straight for the cruiser's passenger window.
