Sensing they were outgunned, the two thieves slowly backed away, keeping their hands high as they retreated into the dark treeline until their footsteps faded into the distance. Once they were gone, Raymond rushed over to the oak tree, pulling a pocket knife from his jeans to slice through Eli's ropes and remove the gag.
"You alright, Eli?" Raymond asked, his voice shaking slightly as he helped the young man stand up. Eli rubbed his raw wrists, leaning against the trunk to catch his breath. "What is going on, Raymond? Who were those guys?"
"I saw the three of you out here from my window," Raymond explained hurriedly. "At first, I thought you were in on it—trying to steal what I found earlier. I went to call the sheriff, but the landline was completely dead. That's when I grabbed my rifle." Eli swallowed hard, keeping quiet about his earlier phone call to the dispatcher. He just nodded in relief. "I'm just glad you showed up when you did."
