Without hesitating a single second, Katie reached her arms deep into the rushing, freezing water of the exposed drain. Her small, nimble fingers brushed against wet fur. Working purely by touch beneath the torrent, she carefully scooped up the first shivering baby and pulled it to safety, immediately handing it to Peter. She plunged her hands back into the rising, muddy water a second and third time.
With a desperate final stretch, she dragged the last gasping creature out just before the basin completely filled to the brim. Three tiny, mysterious creatures were finally safe on the asphalt, shivering violently but alive. Peter bundled the first two gently into his deep jacket pockets, while Katie carefully cradled the third against her uniform. Peter knelt down, shining his light on their soaked fur. “I honestly have no idea what these are,” he murmured in utter confusion. “They look completely unique, but we have to move fast to save them.”
