With the heavy iron grate finally cleared away, the flooding chamber below was completely exposed. Peter quickly unclipped his heavy industrial flashlight and clicked it on, sweeping the powerful beam down into the dark, concrete basin. The bright light sliced through the rushing water, and both Peter and Katie gasped at the sight.
The flashlight illuminated a few tiny, glowing eyes staring back up at them in absolute terror. Three more of the exact same shivering, furry creatures were trapped down there, huddling together desperately as the cold rainwater rapidly began to submerge the shallow floor. The chamber was filling like a bucket, and the miniature waterfall from the curb was threatening to wash them deep into the city’s underground drainage system. “The elephant brought us here on purpose,” Peter shouted over the roaring thunder, his voice laced with awe. “We have to get them out right now before they drown!”
