As Marcus walked back to his sedan, he felt a familiar pinprick on the back of his neck—he called it a cop’s intuition. Was he being watched? Just then an unknown, encrypted call vibrated violently in his grip. He answered, pressing the phone tightly to his ear.
"You're running out of time, Marcus," a raspy, heavily accented voice chuckled over heavy static. "The Syndicate doesn't believe in second chances. A reminder that if you cross us, you won’t see daylight again."
The call disconnected before he could speak. Marcus clenched his jaw, his knuckles turning white on the steering wheel. He had to find Dan. Only his partner had the missing links that would untangle this. He slammed the phone on his seat in frustration, taking a sharp breath to compose himself before pulling onto the highway.
