Following the burner phone’s digital ping, Marcus arrived at an isolated cabin near Blackwood Ridge. He met a local forest ranger near the overgrown access road. "I'm checking a tip on the Vance case," Marcus said, showing his badge. "Keep this quiet. If there's a leak in the department, I can't risk tipping anyone off."
"Nobody’s supposed to be up here," the ranger replied, pointing toward the trees. "Saw a vehicle near the ridge two nights ago, though." Marcus nodded grimly. He thought to himself, "If Daniel’s out there, I need to reach him first before someone else finds him. I need to handle this alone."
Inside the cabin, Marcus picked the lock and swept his flashlight across the dust. Beneath a loose floorboard, he found a flash drive. "Still keeping secrets, aren't you, Dan?" Marcus whispered to the empty room. He slid the drive into his pocket, his face hardening. But he knew Daniel would’ve made copies.
