Panicking in the dark, Richard backed away from the house, intending to slip around the garden wall to dial emergency services safely away from the intruder. In his haste, his boot caught on a coil of garden hose buried in the mud. Richard stumbled backward, falling hard into a dense, soaking-wet bush.
Inside the house, the courier froze at the sudden rustling noise outside, turning on his heel and stepping back out onto the patio with the tire iron held high. Richard sat frozen in the damp soil, clutching his scraped elbow, terrified to breathe. He pressed his back flat against the fence, not moving an inch.
Then, his phone screen flared to life in his palm. The hard impact against the ground had triggered a long-press on his side button. From the darkness of the bush, a cheerful, synthetic voice chirped loudly at full volume: "I'm listening. How can I help you?"
