Tom and two climbing rescuers worked upstream while the others stayed with Mia. The gorge narrowed where loose rock hung above the river. Oliver sat on a shelf barely wider than a table, one leg trapped beneath a branch. “Oliver!” Tom shouted. “Can you hear me?” Oliver looked up. “Loud enough,” he called. “Get Mia out first.” “She’s safe,” Tom said. “Now let us reach you.”
They lowered a harness while a rescuer anchored the rope. “Don’t move,” Tom warned. Oliver glanced at the cracks behind him. “Wasn’t planning on it.” “Can you feel your leg?” “Enough to know I won’t be walking out.” Tom crouched at the edge. “We’ll deal with that later. Clip the harness around your waist.” Oliver obeyed, then asked, “You found my camp, didn’t you?” Lena called back, “We found everything.”
As the rope tightened, the ledge broke into the river. Oliver swung against the rock. “Hold him!” Tom shouted. The team hauled until Oliver reached stable ground. He asked, “You saw the packs?” Lena nodded. “Why keep them?” Oliver looked toward the valley. “Because some of those people could still be out here.” Tom frowned. Oliver met his eyes. “And I know where we stopped looking.”
