Keeping his distance near the entrance, Calvin swept his flashlight beam along the dirt floor toward the shattered wall. Sitting in the shadows near the breach was an ancient, giant paper-wasp nest the size of a trunk that had fallen from the rafters. The gray pulp shell had been torn wide open on one side.
As Calvin focused his beam on it, he froze, his pulse spiking instantly. The nest was moving. Even from twenty feet away, the brittle, gray paper-pulp mass was rhythmically swelling, rising, and falling in the dim light. Why on earth is a wasp nest moving? Calvin thought, a cold chill running down his spine.
Wasps don't breathe like that, and an abandoned husk shouldn't be expanding. Could a dormant swarm be pulsating together inside? Or was something unthinkable nesting in the pulp? Too terrified to step any closer into the pitch-black room, he stared at the alien, breathing mound in total bewilderment.
