Deeply unsettled, Clara walked over to the wooden fence separating her property from her next-door neighbor, Leo. To her surprise, Leo was already standing in his yard, staring blankly at a pair of unmoving crows on his lawn. When Clara explained what she had been finding, Leo’s face paled.
“I thought I was losing my mind,” Leo admitted, leaning over the fence. “I’ve found three separate squirrels completely asleep since yesterday.” When Clara brought up the weird, human-like whistling she had heard, Leo snapped his fingers. “I heard it too! Around two in the morning. A sharp, high-pitched tune.”
Separated from the rest of the quiet subdivision, the two neighbors quickly came to a grim conclusion. Someone had to be creeping around their properties playing a sick, elaborate prank. The reigning theory was that a local trespasser was intentionally luring the wildlife to their shared treeline and experimenting on them with heavy tranquilizers.
