American Staffordshire Terriers, which are often mistaken for Pit Bulls, are just as strong and muscular. Despite their friendly demeanor toward people, they are often subject to restrictions because of their history as fighting dogs.

They require consistent training, ongoing socialization, and an experienced handler, which makes them a challenge for first-time owners. In parts of Australia and Europe, owning an American Staffordshire Terrier is either completely banned or requires a special license.   Why they are banned: Strength, history of fighting, and potential for aggression. Where they are banned: Australia, parts of Europe, and some U.S. states.
