The Fila Brasileiro, or Brazilian Mastiff, is known for its strong loyalty, territorial instincts, and excellent guarding abilities. In the past, this breed was used in Brazil to track down and capture runaway slaves, which makes it naturally protective and aggressive toward strangers.

Fila Brasileiros are banned in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and ownership is heavily regulated in other countries. Although they can be very loyal to their owners, their protective nature makes them unsuitable for homes with frequent visitors or small children.   Why they are banned: Extreme protective instinct, unpredictable temperament, and size. Where they are banned: the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and parts of Europe.
