13 Simple Paint Hacks That Make Painting Your Home So Much Easier

Give Your Paint Can An Extra Barrier Before Closing It

Even after you've cleaned the rim of your paint can, there's still one small thing you can do before putting the lid back on. Grab a piece of plastic wrap. Place it over the opening of the paint can before replacing the lid. Try to cover the opening neatly, then position the lid over it and tap the lid into place. The plastic wrap creates an additional barrier between the paint and the lid.

It can help reduce direct contact between leftover paint and the underside of the lid, while also helping create a tighter seal when the container is stored. This is especially useful when you know you're going to need the remaining paint again later. Of course, the most important part is still making sure the can is properly closed and stored according to the paint manufacturer's recommendations. You don't want to rely on plastic wrap alone to preserve paint.

But as a simple extra step before closing the container, it takes only a few seconds. And unlike some painting tricks, there's almost nothing to buy. You probably already have plastic wrap sitting in a kitchen drawer. So before you hammer that paint-can lid shut and put the can away, a small sheet of plastic might be worth adding to your routine.
