Why Would Anyone Choose To Live This Way?
It's probably the question most people would ask first. Why deliberately give up electricity, running water and so many of the conveniences of modern life? For Emma, the answer is about much more than living in an unusual house. She wanted a simpler existence and a closer relationship with the natural world. Over time, she became increasingly interested in living without the constant expenses and complexity associated with conventional housing.
Her tiny home gave her a way to do that. Because the space is so small, she can't accumulate endless possessions. Because there's no electricity, she follows the natural rhythm of daylight more closely. And because everyday necessities require effort, she remains closely connected to the land around her. What many people would consider inconveniences have become ordinary parts of her routine.
That doesn't mean Emma believes everyone should abandon their homes and move into the woods. But after years of living this way, she has discovered that she doesn't actually miss many of the things she once thought were necessary. In fact, she describes her lifestyle as a kind of luxury. Not luxury in the traditional sense of expensive furniture or modern technology. Her idea of luxury is having a home that gives her the freedom to live the way she wants.
