This man turned an old school bus into a home and it looks amazing

Talley thought it would be better to place the public areas at the front of the bus. His plan included a kitchen that was actually bigger than the one he had in his old home, a big desk, his old sofa and enough space for a double bed. Plus, there had to be enough storage space, of course.

Kitchen

After he took on the walls and the roof of the bus, it was time to work on the interior. He built a wooden frame and started work on the kitchen. Most of the things he needed, he bought at IKEA for a low price. The cupboards and drawers cost him 30 dollars, and the big butcher block on the kitchen counter only cost 120 dollars in total. The kitchen started to take shape pretty quickly and Talley realised that it would end up being bigger than the kitchen he’d had in his expensive rental home.

Solar panels

Talley decided to use solar panels as his preferred energy resource. After all, there’s a lot of sunshine in Texas. He installed the solar panels on the roof during one of the most challenging days of the entire project. “This was one of the most frustrating days of the renovation,” he recalled. “I did it myself, it was very windy and things kept falling off the roof.” But it was worth it since the solar panels enable him to generate electricity while he’s on the road, and this means he doesn’t have a huge electricity bill at the end of the month.

Bathroom

In his new bathroom, Talley installed a shower and a toilet. For the door of the bathroom, he used a renovated wooden stable door. But pretty early on, he noticed that he didn’t use the bathroom as much as he thought he would. “I can use the bathroom, but I rarely do so. I pee outside as the good Lord meant it,” Talley explains. “As for showering, I’ve built a great outdoor shower or I shower at the gym.”

Project

All together, Talley spent about a year on this amazing project. He now lives in his renovated school bus full time and pays less than 100 dollars in rent and utilities each month. That’s saving money to the extreme! He’s currently working on a van so he can travel through the country a little more. In total, Talley invested around 15,000 dollars to turn the school bus into his new home.
