Get Rid of the “Maybe Someday” Stuff
Some clutter is difficult to remove because you can always imagine a future situation where you'll need it. That small appliance might eventually come in handy. The serving tray could be useful at a party. Those extra glasses might be perfect for a dinner you're planning someday. But how long have you already been waiting for that day?
Take a look at small kitchen appliances you haven't touched in a year. If you've repeatedly managed without them, consider whether they deserve the cabinet space they're occupying. The same goes for excess serving dishes, bowls and glassware. Then open the refrigerator and freezer. You'll probably find ingredients, condiments and leftovers that have been pushed toward the back and forgotten.
If nobody is realistically going to eat them, they're only taking up room. This isn't about getting rid of everything. It's about recognizing the difference between something you might use and something you actually use. The phrase “just in case” can justify keeping almost anything. But if you've already gone a year without needing something, that's worth paying attention to. Sometimes the easiest way to create more space is simply to stop saving things for a future that never arrives.
