This is why you shouldn’t add extra pepper to your food in a restaurant

Cleaning

How come those menus and pepper shakers are so gross? Jonas Sickler, director at ConsumerSafety.org, knows what the cause is. He explains to Reader’s Digest that it’s all about a lack of dedication at the part of the restaurant. “Most pepper shakers are only wiped down if they appear dirty, and even then, only with a damp cloth.” Sickler can also tell us that the shakers are never emptied out which means they never get cleaned on the inside.

Children

Sickler also explains that children cause quite a few bacteria to end up on the shakers. According to him, a lot of parents let their toddlers and young children play with the shakers to make sure they stay relatively calm and don’t cause too much of a ruckus. “This means they will be covered in drool, and whatever else that is on the toddler’s fingers.”
