Zookeepers decided to observe for a moment before intervening. The lion showed no signs of hostility. In fact, it seemed to be calmed by the puppy’s presence. One of the senior keepers watching the scene recognized the lion’s behavior.
Just a few weeks before, this same lion had lost its only cub to an illness. Since that time, the lion had become withdrawn and depressed. It showed little interest in food, and the zoo staff was growing worried about its well being.
Now, for the first time in many days, the lion was engaged and showing signs of comfort. This positive change in behavior appeared to be sparked by the stray puppy that had found its way into the enclosure.
