The last Samurai
These men were part of the last generation of Samurai. This photo was taken in 1900. For centuries, the Samurai had been the hereditary military nobility in Japan, embodying the bushido codes of martial virtues, indifference to pain, and unflinching loyalty. As modern militaries emerged in the 19th century, the samurai were rendered increasingly obsolete. The Meiji Restoration ended their feudal roles, and they moved into professional and entrepreneurial roles.
