Leo stared at the drifting leviathan. He looked at his basic radio, but there were no emergency broadcasts or alerts filling the airwaves. The ocean was completely quiet, and the massive ship was behaving like a ghost. An abandoned ship of this size was a floating danger. Left to wander, it would eventually crash into a reef, a dock, or another boat in the dark.
“This is crazy,” Leo whispered to himself. He twisted his throttle, matching the slow speed of the cargo ship. He pulled his small wooden boat right up alongside the massive steel hull, navigating through the ripples it created. Near the middle of the ship, his eyes caught something. A heavy rope ladder was hanging over the side, its bottom rungs dipping and splashing into the water.
Leo tied his boat’s ropes securely to the bottom of the ladder, slung his canvas bag over his shoulder, and began to climb the giant steel wall.
