To ease his mind and prove he was just being paranoid, Mark suggested, “Let’s loop back toward the main entrance.” This meant passing the tiger exhibit one more time. Clara agreed, wanting to give Lily another quick look at the big cats before they packed up for the long drive home. The area around the glass was much quieter now, with only a few scattered visitors walking by.
When they arrived, Rajah was nowhere near the front glass. The massive cat was lying on a high rock ledge far in the back corner of the enclosure, resting his head on his paws with his eyes tightly shut. He appeared asleep, ignoring the chatter of the park visitors walking past his fence.
The moment Mark unbuckled Lily and her small shoes touched the ground near the glass, something incredible happened. Rajah’s eyes flew open, and he lifted his head instantly. Before anyone could react, the heavy tiger leapt down from his high ledge and sprinted straight down the hill, sliding to a graceful halt right in front of the window where Lily was standing.
