Two-year-old Lily stood on her tiptoes, pressing both of her tiny palms flat against the thick glass wall of the big cat exhibit. On the other side stood Rajah, a massive five-hundred-pound Bengal tiger with bright amber eyes. Instead of pacing or growling, the giant predator lowered his head until his nose was just inches from Lily’s face, separated only by the clear barrier.
Lily took three small steps to the left, her little shoes squeaking on the pavement. Rajah immediately shifted his weight, matching her movement step for step without breaking eye contact. She laughed and stepped three paces back to the right, and the huge cat mirrored her again, moving with a surprising, gentle grace that shocked everyone standing nearby.
A crowd began to gather around them, murmuring in total disbelief as the tiger sat down on his back legs. Rajah lifted one heavy, padded paw and placed it against the glass, directly over the spot where Lily’s hand rested. He closed his eyes and let out a deep rumble, bowing his head toward the little girl as if paying respect to an old friend.
