It happened on a regular Tuesday, during the boring part of bath time, when Mabel was just sitting there getting cleaned in the tub.
She looked out the little window above the tub, the one she had to stand up on the bath stool to reach, and saw Mr. Higgins's back gate swing open. He came through carrying a wooden crate, the kind with slats like a pirate treasure chest, and he was walking funny — hunched over, glancing at his own dark windows like he was checking if his house was watching him.
He carried three more crates before Mabel's mom came in to say it was time to dry up and wear pajamas. Each time, Mr. Higgins looked over both shoulders first. Mabel stood very still, water dripping off her elbow onto the bath mat, and thought: Nobody carries crates like that unless they don't want anybody to see.
