Coast Guard Sonar Picked Up Something on the Seafloor — Then Divers Went Down

The ocean swallowed the afternoon sunlight within fifty feet of the surface. Cold water squeezed Samira’s wetsuit as she led the way down the guide line, her dive light cutting a sharp yellow beam through the swirling particulate. At three hundred and eighty feet, the seabed leveled out, revealing a massive, angular shadow. It wasn't a modern ship, but the long, low hull of an unmarked steel cargo vessel resting flat on its belly in the silt.

"You seeing the scale of this thing, Samira?" Jax’s voice crackled through her helmet speaker, heavy with acoustic static. "It looks about two hundred feet long, completely rusted over. But look at the bow—the heavy steel hull plates are split wide open, peeled outward like an aluminum can. Something exploded from the inside out."

"It's a ghost ship," Samira replied, swimming along the shattered upper deck. "The bridge structure is collapsed, the crane masts are snapped in half, and there are no identification numbers anywhere on the hull. Let's head down into the main cargo hold through that torn hatch and see what this vessel died carrying."
