Then the dinner invitation arrived. A message to the whole family — Diane’s name at the top, warm and carefully worded. A “chance for closure,” she wrote…“to be together and move forward.” Diane had something she wanted to share, and she hoped everyone would come. Sarah read it standing in the kitchen and felt her stomach drop.
Tom said, “We don’t have to go.” Sarah was already dialing Sherry. Sherry picked up on the second ring, and Sarah read the message aloud. There was a brief silence. Sherry said, “Go.” Sarah said, “Are you sure?” Sherry said, “If she’s planning to use that report in front of the family, you need to be in the room when she does. Go.”
