Teen Walks Into Hospital With Shoebox — Staff Are Stunned At Its Contents

At 2:31 in the morning, seventeen-year-old Noel pushed through the hospital’s emergency room doors carrying a shoebox with both hands. His gas-station name badge was still clipped to his shirt, and sweat darkened the collar despite the cold outside. The receptionist looked up from her computer. “Can I help you?” Noel glanced at the box. “I need a nurse.” “Are you hurt?” “No.” He swallowed. “But I think this is an emergency.”

The receptionist stood immediately. “What happened?” Noel looked around the waiting room. A man slept beneath a coat in one corner. Somewhere behind the swinging doors, a machine beeped steadily. Noel lowered his voice. “A woman left this at the gas station where I work.” The receptionist stared at the box. “Left what?” Noel did not answer. He could still hear the strange little sound that had come from inside it twenty minutes earlier.

A nurse hurried over. “I’m Carla. Tell me what’s going on.” Noel carefully placed the shoebox on the counter. Carla reached toward the lid. “Wait,” Noel said. She stopped. “What?” He rubbed his palms against his jeans. “Just be careful when you open it.” Carla’s expression changed. She pulled on a pair of gloves and slowly lifted one corner of the lid. Noel looked away before he could see inside again.
