Mark set out along the familiar bends leading down to High Meadow. The air was mild, and the trail was quiet. As he descended past the three-mile marker, he paused to look around. Usually, this stretch of the trail was bustling with wildlife—chipmunks darting across the granite steps, jays calling out from the upper branches, and the occasional deer grazing near the creek.
Today, he noticed only a single squirrel chattering high up in a pine tree. It wasn't eerie—wildlife moved around all the time depending on trail traffic—but there were definitely fewer animals out than he was used to seeing on a clear morning.
Mark adjusted his pack straps and kept moving down the trail, assuming a passing hiker group might have startled the local wildlife earlier in the morning. He picked up his pace, aiming to clear High Meadow before the noon heat set in.
