By the time Jessica had pushed through three packed carriages to reach the rear of Car 4, her legs felt like lead. Up close, the setup was even more absurd. Dozens of exhausted commuters were standing inches away, swaying uncomfortably in the aisle, eyeing the space but completely stonewalled by the young woman’s dismissive posture.
Jessica took a deep breath, stepped around a man holding a folded umbrella, and stopped directly beside the bench. "Excuse me," Jessica said, keeping her voice polite but firm. "May I sit there?" The young woman didn't move an inch. Her thumb continued to flick across her phone screen, her earbuds blocking out the world.
Jessica took a small step closer, her knees trembling from exhaustion. "Pardon me," she repeated, raising your voice over the rumble of the tracks. "Could you please move your bag?" The woman didn't tilt her head, blink, or acknowledge that a human being was speaking to her. She simply reached up with one manicured finger, tapped the volume button on her phone to turn her music up, and shifted her shoulder away—locking Jessica out completely.
