An hour later, Hannah sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket on the deck of her father's boat, watching Coast Guard officers secure the illegal ghost net. A Coast Guard captain boarded her vessel to take her statement. "You're lucky to be alive, Miss Gray," the captain said gently. "That abandoned ship was registered to an illegal poaching syndicate—pirates who set destructive gill nets in protected waters. When our cutter spotted them fleeing earlier today, they cut their nets loose and ran."
He smiled slightly. "Because you alerted us and held the location, our coastal patrol intercepted their boat ten miles north. They're in custody now." Hannah looked out over the quiet water. A short distance away, three heads broke the surface. It was the brave harbor seal, floating safely alongside the pup and the large adult.
The seal looked back at Hannah, letting out one soft, quiet bark before diving deep into the safe, open sea.
