Abandoning the radio, Hannah threw on a wetsuit, strapped the dive knife to her leg, and plunged off the side of the boat. The freezing ocean hit her like a wall of ice, instantly knocking the breath from her lungs. The current was brutal, tugging violently at her body as she kicked toward the ghost net.
She submerged, opening her eyes in the stinging saltwater. The scene was terrifying. The massive net swayed like a dark curtain, heavy with debris and trapped seal bodies. Hannah swam straight for the dying pup near the surface. She grabbed the thick nylon rope tangled around its throat, unsheathed her knife, and began sawing furiously.
The ocean current pulled against her, making every slice an agony of resistance. Her muscles burned. Snap. The rope parted. The pup kicked frantically, tearing through the loosened mesh and shooting to the surface, gasping for air. One free. But deeper down, the large adult remained motionless.
