The pirates acted with terrifying efficiency. While two of the men kept their eyes locked on the friends, shouting threats to prevent any sudden movements, the leader aggressively grabbed Leo by the collar of his shirt. He violently shoved Leo toward the companionway hatch, forcing him down the steep steps into the lower living cabin. Maya and Sam were pushed close behind him, stumbling into the tight, wood-paneled space.
Inside the dining cabin, the intruders forced the three friends onto the small cushioned bench. Using heavy mooring ropes they had grabbed from the deck, the thieves quickly and tightly bound the friends’ hands together, completely neutralizing any chance of a physical fight. Leo, Maya, and Sam sat shoulder to shoulder, their hearts hammering against their ribs in the claustrophobic space. They were officially hostages on their own vessel, stripped of their freedom and completely trapped beneath the deck while the hostile crew took absolute control of the environment.
