The following morning, Terry sat at the glass counter of a local repair shop, watching the elderly jeweler adjust his magnification visor. "It was an old ring," Terry explained, leaning over the glass. "Belonged to my mother. My wife fell on the ice yesterday. I just want to know if you can solder the seam without ruining the design."
The jeweler didn't answer right away. He turned the ring over under a bright fluorescent lamp, using a fine metal probe to trace the line created by the impact. His brow furrowed. He adjusted his visor, leaning in until his nose was inches from the metal. "Young man," the jeweler said slowly, his voice dropping as he looked up. "Has this ring ever been altered?"
"Not to my knowledge," Terry said. "Why?" "Because this isn't just a crack from a fall," the jeweler muttered, picking up a pair of precision tweezers. "The impact didn't break the gold. It popped a hidden pressure latch. The face of this ring is hinged... and the inside has been hollowed out."
