The gold band sat heavy in Terry’s palm, its polished surface catching the warm overhead glow of the kitchen light. He smoothed his thumb over the raised oval face, feeling the familiar weight he had associated with comfort for as long as he could remember.
"I want you to have this," Terry said, his voice dropping into a quiet, reverent register as he looked across the table at his wife, Sarah. Sarah paused, looking from his eyes down to the metal resting between them. She knew the history without him having to speak it. "Terry... are you sure?" she asked softly. "It’s the only thing you have left of her."
"That’s why I want it on your hand," Terry replied, reaching out to take her fingers. He carefully slid the broad gold ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly, as if it had been custom-forged for her. "She wore it every single day. Seeing you wear it... it makes it feel like a part of her is still here in this house." Sarah turned her hand, watching the light dance off the classic, old-fashioned design. "I’ll never take it off."
