Without a second thought, Mark raced outside, his heart pounding. He reached the porch and found Max, his small whimpers giving away his location, his wide eyes full of terror. He scooped him up gently, feeling his shaky body in his arms, and hurried him inside.
It had been a close call. Max was battered and scared, but he was safe. His bravery, his will to survive, had carried him through. Mark held him tight, grateful beyond words that he hadn’t lost him.
He hugged Max tight and brought him inside the house. What could’ve ended horribly thankfully ended well. Max, tired from his ordeal quickly fell asleep on Mark’s lap.
