Teresa had one second to decide who to be. "Hi there!" she said brightly, adopting a bubbly customer-service tone. "Just confirming the order, sir. One large pepperoni, extra cheese, and one small cheese?" Silence met her question. She could hear him breathing heavily into the receiver. Behind him, faintly in the room, Kayla said, "Derek, please. It's just pizza."
"She's fine," Derek Vance said. His voice was slow, cold, and flat, and every word sounded like a heavy iron door being locked. "She doesn't want a pizza. Wrong number." "Sir, the order is already in the—" Click. The call went completely dead. Teresa stared at the active call window on her screen as the audio meter went blank.
"He hung up," she reported softly. Luis was already keying his microphone. "All units, 41 Birch Lane. Line is down. The suspect has control of the caller's phone." Teresa's hand hovered over the automated callback button. If she called back as 911, Derek would realize the police were coming. If she didn't call back, they would be blind until officers arrived. She pressed the button.
