Woman Calls 911 and Orders a Large Pizza – The Dispatcher Realizes Why and Sends Every Car

"Wexley County 911. What is your emergency?" Teresa Boyd had said those words thousands of times over her nineteen years on the force. It was 3:41 on a sunny October Saturday, exactly nineteen minutes before her long twelve-hour shift ended. Outside, leaves fell in the brisk autumn breeze, but inside the windowless communications center, the only glow came from computer monitors reflecting off her desk.

"Hi," a young woman said. Her tone was calm, almost cheerful. "I'd like to order a large pepperoni, extra cheese. To 41 Birch Lane." Teresa rolled her eyes toward Luis, the veteran dispatcher sitting at the console beside her. Teenagers, she thought. "Ma'am, this is 911. You've got the wrong—" "Yes, a large," the woman said brightly, cutting her off. But underneath the cheerful words, Teresa heard her breath catch—a quick, shaky hitch in her throat. Then a man's voice came through, low and uncomfortably close to the receiver:

"Who are you talking to?" "The pizza place," the woman said smoothly. "I'm getting us lunch." Teresa's finger stopped hovering above the disconnect button. Prank callers giggled; they didn't have a man in the room talking in that chilling voice. Without looking away from her monitor, she reached out and grabbed Luis's sleeve hard. Nineteen years on the job, and Teresa had never taken a pizza order. "Large pepperoni, extra cheese," Teresa said lightly into her headset. "Ma'am, I'm going to ask you a few questions about your order…"
