Claire could not see the two men clearly from the command post, but every update reached her over the radio. “Raising both,” someone reported. The rescue specialist was being lifted with the injured pilot secured against him, while the rope team controlled their movement from above. A few minutes later, another update came. “Halfway. Both lines stable.” Claire watched the rescuers at the cliff edge work without looking away.
The wind still pushed hard across the headland. Then several members of the rope team moved forward together. First, the rescue specialist appeared at the edge, still holding the injured pilot close. Other rescuers reached down and helped pull them onto solid ground. “Both are up,” someone called. The specialist immediately moved aside so the paramedics could reach the pilot. Claire saw another team member check the rescuer as well. He appeared shaken and tired, but unhurt.
A few days later, Claire learned that the pilot had survived. His injuries were serious, but doctors expected him to recover. Weeks later, a short message arrived from him. He thanked them and explained that he had been unable to reach his phone after the crash. Claire showed David the message, then opened the original photograph again. “We nearly scrolled past it,” she said. David nodded. Claire looked at the tiny patch of color on the cliff. Now she knew exactly what had been there.
