The name “Leo” itself is historic, with previous Popes Leo having dealt with some serious characters, like Attila the Hun. One has to wonder if Pope Leo XIV is now preparing to negotiate with modern-day “barbarian hordes” – perhaps in the form of relentless social media trolls? May his Wi-Fi be strong.
Interestingly, despite his very American roots, some Italian media have already dubbed him “the least American of the Americans.” Is this a compliment? A subtle dig? Or just classic Italian understatement? It adds another layer of delightful confusion to the whole affair.
Perhaps they mean he won’t be asking for ketchup with his pasta, or maybe he just has a really good tailor. Whatever the reason, it’s a charmingly contradictory label for the first-ever Pope from the USA.
