Three weeks later, Eleanor sat beside her attorney in a custody conference room. Julian appeared relaxed across the table. His lawyer argued that Eleanor's demanding career created an unstable home and that Julian had been the parent trying to provide consistency. When Eleanor's attorney mentioned the nanny scheme, Julian leaned back calmly. "Where is this supposed evidence?" his lawyer asked.
Julian glanced toward Eleanor with the smallest smile. He believed he had won. His lawyer pushed for primary custody, pointing to the repeated resignations of the nannies as proof that Eleanor's work life had disrupted Leo's care. For several uncomfortable minutes, the story Julian had spent months creating seemed to be working exactly as planned. Then Eleanor's attorney reached into her case and placed a phone on the table.
She selected a video and pressed play. Julian's voice filled the room. "You forced me to do it!" Then came his admission that a good mother stayed home, followed by his angry declaration that he had been trying to bring Eleanor to her senses. It had also captured him breaking the nanny camera. Julian's smug smile suddenly vanished. His attorney slowly turned toward him, shocked. Eleanor's lawyer stopped the recording. For the first time, Julian had nothing to say for himself. Eleanor was glad she had thought of recording their little exchange on her phone, which had been in her breast pocket that day.
