Dellray placed the bagged note on the kitchen table between Ryan and Claire. He watched Ryan read it. He watched the color leave the man’s face. Dellray said, “Tell me about when the payments stopped.” Ryan was quiet for a moment. He said, “Three months before they stopped, I got a letter. It said the arrangement was concluded.”
“Concluded. Not terminated. Not discontinued. Concluded—as in fully resolved, closed out, finished.” He looked at the note. “For almost 30 years, the monthly payment was the contract—my silence, his protection money. When the letter said concluded, I realized he wasn’t ending the payment. He was ending the need for it.”
