The story snapped into focus with terrifying clarity. Poachers had tracked the bear family into this remote valley, shot the mother with a tranquilizer dart to capture her, and scared the cubs—sending the terrified young bears running up the nearest tree, where they fell into the hollow trunk.
Marco followed heavy drag marks through the brush, his heart hammering against his ribs. The trail led into a dense, dark patch of trees. There, lying motionless under a low blanket of branches, was the massive, dark form of the mother bear. Marco froze, ducking down behind a large rock. Her enormous chest was rising and falling in deep, heavy breaths. The bright yellow tube of a tranquilizer dart was still sticking out of her hip. Then, her back paw twitched.
A low groan escaped her jaws. Her eyelids fluttered, revealing foggy, disoriented eyes. The poachers had used too weak a sleeping drug, or an expired one. The mother bear was waking up—and she was going to be confused, furious, and extremely dangerous.
