Marco stayed safely inside the steel cab of his tractor, keeping the engine running softly. Through the heavy glass window, he watched as the disoriented mother bear followed the frantic cries coming from the ancient cedar tree. She hurried over to the trunk, pressing her nose against the opening Marco had cut into the wood and making soft, gentle grunts.
Encouraged by her familiar voice, the two cubs used the rough edges of Marco's hand-saw cut as a foothold. One by one, they scrambled up out of the dark hollow tree, tumbling over the edge and burying themselves in their mother's thick fur.
The mother bear licked them frantically, checking them over before guiding them deep into the thick, protected wilderness of the upper ridge, far beyond the reach of the logging roads. The next morning, the fog finally cleared, leaving the forest bathed in bright sunlight. Marco returned to the site with his crew. He packed up his tools and wrapped the ancient cedar in bright orange tape—marking it as a permanent protected sanctuary, left standing tall and untouched in the quiet forest.
