The resort workers backed away slowly, lowering their bright torches toward the ground. With the chaotic noise subsiding, the lion immediately dropped low again, creeping slowly beneath the dark body of the parked Jeep until he sank completely out of sight.
Leaving Sarah with the kids upstairs, David crept back downstairs to see what was happening. Peering cautiously out the lower glass window, he saw Joseph across the driveway, making urgent hand gestures for David to stay back and away from the pane.
Through the darkness under the metal chassis, David saw the lion reaching out with a massive, heavy paw, delicately trying to hook something trapped deep in the metal skid plate beneath the engine block. It wasn't trying to attack the lodge at all; it was desperately trying to extract a tiny creature stuck inside the undercarriage.
