On the third morning, the strange obsession spread to the rest of the herd. Robert walked into the barn to find three more calves huddled around the corner, standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the dim morning light.
They were jostling violently, shoving and knocking one another aside to press their muzzles against the floor-level masonry. The original dark-spotted calf was wedged firmly in the center of the fray, stubbornly refusing to yield an inch of the damp patch to the newcomers.
Frustrated and deeply concerned for the herd's health, Robert moved all the feeding troughs to the far side of the barn. Thinking the animals were suffering from a severe nutrient deficiency, he scattered fresh mineral salt blocks across the floor. The calves didn't even sniff them. They stepped directly over the fresh supplements, completely ignoring the salt blocks to fight over the dirty bricks.
