Claire stayed inside while Megan spoke with the principal. Through the front windows, she saw two officers talking to Ryan beside the SUV. One officer asked something, and Ryan rubbed both hands over his face. Emily stood pressed against his side. Claire could just about make out one question by the police officer — “Where are you living right now?” She couldn’t catch Ryan’s answer.

Officer Daniels came inside and asked Megan to take Emily to the office. Claire went too. Through the doorway, she watched Ryan stand beside the SUV. Daniels returned outside and spoke to him again. Ryan stared at the pavement, then took out his keys. She saw his mouth make the word, “Fine,” resignedly. The officer took them. The rear hatch began to lift.
