Claire Bennett looked up from the attendance sheet when the classroom door opened. Emily Carter slipped inside, cheeks red, backpack hanging from one shoulder. The clock showed 8:43. It was the third time that week. “Sorry, Ms. Bennett,” Emily whispered. Claire kept her voice gentle. “Are you all right?” Emily nodded too quickly. Her hair was tangled, and she wore the same gray sweatshirt as on Monday. “Did something happen?” Claire asked. Emily stared at the floor. “It wasn’t Dad’s fault.”
Claire had not mentioned her father. “I didn’t say it was,” she replied. Emily’s face tightened. “I know. I just mean we were late.” Claire let it go, but watched her closely. Emily rubbed her eyes during reading and ate every crumb of her snack. At lunch, Claire saw her slip two unopened cracker packs into her backpack. “Want another?” Claire asked. Emily shook her head. “These are for…later.”
At pickup, Emily hurried toward a dark-blue SUV. Ryan Carter waved from behind the wheel. Before driving away, he checked the school entrance twice. Claire watched the SUV turn left, away from the neighborhood listed on Emily’s file. Something about that bothered her. She could not explain exactly why yet.
