Carl lay pinned against the truck’s rear tire, cursing loudly, his cool facade entirely shattered. Ryan didn't have solid evidence to justify calling for emergency backup yet—he was acting purely on an unexplainable gut feeling and a frantic dog.
Ryan climbed onto the metal side rail of the trailer. Keeping one eye on the handcuffed driver, he pulled a long steel inspection probe from his utility belt. He drove the steel rod deep into the center of the hay bale directly beneath Duke’s trembling paws. CLANG. The probe stopped dead after only three inches. It hit something solid, rigid, and metallic.
Ryan pulled the rod out and jammed it into the bale six inches to the left. CLANG. He tried again from the lower edge, angling upward. CLANG. A massive, hard structure was hidden deep inside the core of the hay. Ryan climbed down and stood over Carl. "What's concealed in the bales?" Carl stared straight ahead, his jaw locked, refusing to say a word.
