Laura brought Jack Mercer back to the station and asked him to walk through the highway scene again. “She was moving on her own?” Laura asked. Jack nodded. “Slowly, but yes. And she kept looking behind her.” Officers searching the area had found footprints cutting through scrubland from a frontage road. That trail eventually led investigators toward a highway service area several miles away.
Security footage showed Anna arriving there on an intercity bus. She entered with other passengers, bought water, then slipped through a rear exit instead of reboarding. Twelve minutes later, a dark sedan entered the lot. Laura leaned toward the screen. “Run the plate.” The answer came back quickly. The sedan belonged to Richard Cole, the same vehicle missing from the driveway.
Richard had never mentioned following Anna’s bus. That changed things. Laura paused the footage on Anna’s face while Jack waited to sign his statement. He kept looking at the screen. “Something wrong?” Laura asked. Jack frowned. “I know her from somewhere.” He rubbed his jaw, thinking. Then his expression changed. “Not her exactly. A kid. Posters at truck stops years ago.” He slowly pulled out his phone. “Sophie Lang. Please look up Sophie Lang now!”
