Laura spent the next few days speaking with former teachers, neighbors, doctors, and coworkers. The answer was simpler than she expected. During Sophie’s first years with the Coles, they moved often, avoided photographs, and homeschooled her. As she grew older, they relaxed. By then, the famous missing-person images showed a five-year-old child, not the teenager people knew as Anna Cole.
At the bakery, where Anna worked part-time after school, a worker remembered Anna seeming familiar on her first day. “I told her I was sure I’d seen her somewhere before,” the woman said. “She laughed and said people told her that sometimes.” Nobody followed the thought. Why would they? Laura understood the terrible advantage Helen and Richard had gained. They had not needed to hide Sophie forever. Time had changed her for them.
Laura watched Sophie’s biological parents arrive. Her mother stopped several feet from the bed. “Can I sit with you?” she asked. Sophie nodded. Laura stepped into the corridor. Later, she told Sophie that the credit for making the connection belonged to the truck driver, Jack. That evening, Laura closed the Sophie Lang file and looked at the photograph. Laura wondered how many other missing faces were hiding in plain sight.
