When Your Cat Headbutts You
Now we finally arrive at that common cat behavior: the headbutt. A cat may walk up, press their forehead into your chin, cheek, hand, or leg, and then repeat it as if they are delivering a tiny royal stamp. It can be gentle, firm, or surprisingly committed for such a small animal.
This behavior is often called bunting. Cats have scent glands around parts of their face, including the cheeks and forehead area. When they press or rub their head against you, they are leaving their scent behind. That sounds less romantic than a kiss, but in cat terms, it is deeply social. Your cat is marking you as familiar, safe, and part of their trusted circle.
It is also a sign of affection and comfort. A cat that headbutts you is usually not just asking for attention. They are mixing their scent with yours and saying you belong in their world. The best response is simple: stay calm, offer a gentle pet if they enjoy it, and appreciate the message. You have been officially accepted by a creature with very high standards.
